Today Is Women's Equality Day

INTRODUCTION
On August 26th, 1920 the 19th
Amendment to the United States Constitution, which
granted women the right to vote, was ratified. This was the culmination of the long struggle by
women searching for the right to vote. In 1971, the U.S. Congress designated August 26th as
Women?s Equality Day to commemorate the passage of the 19
th
Amendment and to celebrate
women?s continuing efforts toward equality.
WHY CELEBRATE WOMEN?S EQUALITY DAY
We celebrate Women?s Equality Day to commemorate the tremendous positive change
brought on by the Women?s Movement. Due to the countless millions of women who planned,
organized, lectured, wrote, petitioned, lobbied, paraded, and broke new ground in every field
imaginable, our world is irrevocably changed. Women and men of our generation, and the
ones to follow us, are living the legacy of the women?s rights won against staggering odds in a
revolution achieved without violence. Women can be proud of the legacy of the Women?s
Rights Movement. Today?s activists remind us all to celebrate and cherish past and present
accomplishments of the Women?s Movement before they are lost to history.

The day that women got the right to vote. Maybe one of the most historical days in our history as far as equal rights are concerned.

Women's equality? Why would they want to lower themselves to male-level? [img]wink.gif[/img]

I'm not suggesting that my generation, or those after mine won't be sexist, but at least as respects the practice of law, I think much progress has been made in the past 20-30 years. My law school class (1995) was the 100th, and the first which graduated more chicks than men. I think every class since then has all been that way.

Most of the female attorneys I've spoken to about it that are my age (or close) have said that, among our peers, all things considered, it hasn't been so bad. The problems they have experienced almost invariably come from dealing with older male attorneys and judges.

But to hear the older female attorneys(especially if you ever get the chance to talk to one who practiced in the post-war era) they will tell you horror stories.

Not long after I graduated, a classmate of mine was practicing in one of the rural Ohio counties and told me about the first case she won. The judge was one of these guys who had been on the bench forever, he probably should have retired 20 years prior. Anyway, she won her motion (and the case) and afterwards, she went up to him to ask him for some constructive criticism; what did he like, not like about her motion, how did she handle herself in the court, any suggestions, etc. He basically tells her that she was the prettiest little thing to pass through his court in a long time, how could he rule against her?

Now, for what it's worth, she was hot, I must admit.

CALM DOWN, GAE, I'M JUST BEING A SMART-ASS. Anyway, she was bummed out over the whole deal, worrying that he hadn't even read her motion, there was no way to tell if she had done a good job on the merits. And Big Daddy LewMan, as he always does with he ladies, calmed her down and made her feel better. I reminded her that she won her case, which was what her client had paid her to do, and that's all that mattered at that moment in time. Then I slapped her on the butt and told her to go get me some coffee.
